Finance roles are at the heart of any successful company. Crunching numbers, budgeting, ensuring financial goals are met, and redirecting funds as needed are crucial to keep a business running and operational.
At Automation Anywhere, in addition to our accounting, payroll, and accounts payable finance roles, we have finance group roles in two major areas: revenue and financial planning and analysis (FP&A).
With titles such as revenue accountant, senior revenue accountant, revenue manager, revenue director, senior revenue director, and technical revenue manager, our revenue team wears many hats and has exposure to higher-level management. And they follow ASC 606, the latest revenue recognition standard.
Teammates work in a fast-paced environment that changes constantly with very minimal room for error. Part of their job involves putting together financial packets, such as month-end close and fiscal year-end close, to be presented in board meetings.
Duties include collaborating with legal, sales operations, and contracts teams to structure business deals that will benefit the company, participating in routine close activities, and training and educating business partners.
To be successful in a revenue role, it’s imperative that you understand technical revenue and how it works, and that you have deep expertise in it. It’s very different from traditional accounting. A solid understanding of auditing is also required, such as what you’d get working for one of the Big Four accounting firms.
Flexibility to adapt to constantly changing priorities is a must, as is understanding of ASC 606 principles. Because we’re in an exciting growth/pre-initial public offering period, we need people who don’t shy away from long working hours.
Our FP&A titles span senior manager, senior director, vice president, and analyst. They typically deal one on one with C-level executives, explaining financial matters and numbers models through easy-to-understand storytelling. They also spearhead process improvement by finding ways to streamline, standardize, and automate processes and reporting.
The FP&A team supports the various business units, helping to keep their assigned department or division’s budget on track. If budget course corrections are needed throughout the year, the FP&A teammate assists with that. For those reasons, FP&A workers need to understand how department funds are used and how they can convert to revenue and sales.
The most important key to success in an FP&A role is past FP&A experience. Additionally, past work with the specific business unit(s) the role calls for is a must. How marketing works versus human resources is completely different. For example, marketing focuses on tracking campaign success and return on investment, whereas HR deals more with head count and how it works.
Strong communication skills are needed in an FP&A role as connecting with finance and business leaders is a significant part of the job. It’s also important that you have a proven understanding of data modeling and analytics as you’ll be running the entire gamut of financial planning for a business unit. And typically, one FP&A partner is shared across two to three business units.
To be successful in an FP&A role, you need to be detail-oriented, have at least 10 years of experience with a Software as a Service (SaaS) company, and possess the ability to see the big picture. We want folks who can step back and see what processes can be automated to create a better work-life balance, an initiative that’s highly supported by the FP&A senior leadership.
Put your expertise to work to help us change the way companies around the globe do business — through Robotic Process Automation (RPA).
