A top-of-mind question for companies both large and small is how to scale automation to achieve ever-increasing ROI. In this month’s Botvisions webinar, Derek Toone, Automation Anywhere’s Vice President of the America’s, provided insights by walking participants through the three phases of RPA deployments.
Here, the primary activities are selecting an RPA platform that allows speed and scale, establishing the IT environment on which to install the platform, and identifying the first process or processes to be automated. Choosing an optimal use case for the first deployment is critical. It needs to be able to demonstrate quick-win ROI in order to galvanize the stakeholders and create momentum for the RPA initiative to permeate other areas of the business.
The Scale Phase
Once a company moves into this phase, it’s gone from theory to practice. It has flushed through all the operations details, and has a methodology for processing candidates, and for building, testing, deploying, and managing the bots once they’re in place. The core of this phase is that a robust capacity for automation has been built – whether in-house or through a third-party.
The Transform Phase
“Bot velocity” is the watch phrase for this phase, as it’s the time when a company begins to pull strategic levers to accelerate the automation program. Governance strongly comes into play here. While a company may have established a divisional center of excellence (CoE) in the previous phase, it may move to a federated or centralized model now. This is the time when companies also move from RPA into leveraging cognitive capabilities that expand the scope of automated processes, and potentially move to an on-demand RPA-as-a-service model.
Derek noted that a lot of RPA initiatives stall when moving from the Scale to the Transform phase. He explained that this is often because the customer fails to do a lot of the upfront work around the RPA CoE. For example, they lack the ability to measure and effectively communicate ROI, the short payback timeframe, and a solid business case for expanding the scale and scope of the RPA program.
He also explained that having a single, enterprise-grade product that spans all these phases is a key critical success factor, especially when scaling the RPA program throughout the company. He described enterprise-grade RPA as having five characteristics:

The three key takeaways were: get off the fence and start today, in order to meet the digital transformation disrupter head on; put in the time upfront to build an RPA CoE; and be ambitious in your plans, starting with the end in mind.
